Shakespeare in the hood

Coming in the mail: Rafe Esquith's new book, Lighting their Fires: Raising Extraordinary Children in a Mixed-Up, Muddled-Up, Shook-Up World. (Extra points for conjuring the inimitable E.L. Konigsberg with the title.)

If Esquith's name is new to you, then this is your lucky day. He is a revelation. Check out the clip above--and rent the film about his Hobart Shakespeareans from Netflix.

Well, the subtitle quotes The Kinks' "Lola."

So it does. Three years for polyvalence. I was thinking of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, one of the better kids' books of all time, and quite smart about the stifling character of traditional schooling.

Erin, have you seen the movie "O?" It's basically "Othello," with the lead character as a high school basketball star instead of a general. I thought it worked very well--curious what you thought of it, if you've seen it.

David -- I have not seen it, but will put it on my list! Thanks for the recommendation ....
